BI FORUM 2014: oracle BI, DW & BIG Data Developers ( Atlanta, Brighton May,2014 )

Rittman Mead BI Forum 2014, Brighton & Atlanta

Back for its sixth successful year, the Rittman Mead BI Forum once again will be showcasing the best speakers and presentations on topics around Oracle Business Intelligence and data warehousing, with two events running in Brighton, UK and Atlanta, USA in May 2014. The Rittman Mead BI Forum is different to other Oracle tech events in that we keep the numbers attending limited, topics are all at the intermediate-to-expert level, and we concentrate on just one topic – Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, and the technologies and products that support it.

This year our optional one-day masterclass will be delivered by Lars George from Cloudera, who’ll be talking about the new worlds of Hadoop, NoSQL and big data, and how they relate to Oracle BI&DW, and we also have a great line-up of Oracle, partner and customer speakers who’ll be talking about topics from OBIEE through to Essbase, ODI, Endeca and in-memory analytics databases. And by keeping the numbers limited and everyone attending a single track, it’ll be a great opportunity to network with others in the community, share ideas and discuss what you’ve heard during the day during the many social events and networking dinners.

As in previous years, the BI Forum will run on two consecutive weeks, starting in Brighton and then moving over to Atlanta for the following week. Here’s the dates and venue locations:

The main conference runs on the Thursday and Friday of each week, with a gala meal and Oracle keynote on the Wednesday evening before the event opens, the optional one-day masterclass by Cloudera’s Lars George earlier on the day on Wednesday, and then another meal outside of the hotels on the Thursday evening. Delegates at each event get all of the slides and materials from both events, and we publish all of the slides for anyone to download once the events all close. For the Brighton event you should book your hotel accommodation at the Seattle with us, but for the US event due to popular demand we’ll be asking you to book your hotel accommodation directly with the Renaissance Atlanta Midtown, so that you still get any Marriott/airline frequent flier points.

Who will be Presenting?

Each event has its own agenda, but both will focus on the technology and implementation aspects of Oracle BI, DW, Big Data and Analytics. Most of the sessions run for an hour, but on the first day we’ll also feature a number of shorter, 10-minute TED-style sessions, whilst on the second, we’ll be holding a debate. Here’s the current line-up for the two venues:
Brighton, May 8th and 9th 2014

  • Chris Jenkins, Oracle, “TimesTen for Exalytics: Best Practices and Optimisation”

Optional One-Day Masterclass with Lars George, Cloudera – “Hadoop, HBase, NoSQL and What These Mean for Oracle BI&DW Developers”
Lars George
This year we’re delighted to have Cloudera’s Lars George present our optional one-day masterclass on Wednesday May 7th in Brighton and the following Wednesday (14th) in Atlanta.
Lars George is Cloudera’s Chief Architect in EMEA and advises customers on issues related to Apache Hadoop and Apache HBase; previously, he served as CTO and co-founder of WorldLingo, where he focused on automated translation, machine learning, language processing, and scalable web technologies.

Lars is an HBase Committer/PMC Member and the author of HBase – The Definitive GHuide (O’Reilly), and will be talking to us about how Hadoop works, what HBase and NoSQL are, what sorts of analysis you can perform with Hadoop that you can’t with traditional databases, and how this all relates to our worlds of Oracle BI and data warehousing.

Cloudera are one of the premier commercial Hadoop vendors and their Cloudera Distribution including Hadoop (CDH) platform is the “big data” technology that powers the Oracle Big Data Appliance. Come along to this session to hear in-detail how the Hadoop platform works, how technologies such as Impala, Hive, HBase and MapReduce can be used to perform large-scale data analytics, and how you can start to make use of them alongside more traditional BI&DW tools.

The outlined agenda (subject to change) for Lars’ session is as follows:
Session 1 – Introduction to Hadoop
  • Introduction to Hadoop
  • The Hadoop Ecosystem
  • Cluster Design & Planning
Session 2 – Ingress and Egress
  • The roles of Flume and Sqoop to load record-based data or in bulk
  • Data formats and serialisation – SequenceFile, Avro, Parquet
  • Continuous data collection methods
  • Interfaces for data retrieval (lower-level)
Session 3 – NoSQL and Hadoop
  • HBase Introduction
  • Schema design
  • Access patterns
  • Use-case examples
Session 4 – Analyzing Big Data
  • Processing frameworks – explaining and showing MapReduce
  • High-level abstractions – Hive, Pig, Crunch, Impala, Search
  • Datapipelines in Hadoop – Oozie, Crunch
  • Access to data for existing systems – ODBC and JDBC

Opportunities to Network

It won’t all be presentations and technical talk though. The UK event is set in the Hotel Seattle, Brighton Marina, with lots of bars, restaurants, casinos and cinemas on your doorstep. Just down the road is the seaside city of Brighton, with its famous pebble beach and Brighton Pier. The US event is in midtown Atlanta, right next to Georgia Tech’s Technology Square and many bars and restaurants, and has a MARTA stop just nearby if you’d like to venture further afield into downtown Atlanta

On the evening before both events (Wednesday night, from 6pm) we’ll be hosting a drinks reception and meal, with an opening keynote by the Oracle Product Development team. We’ll also host a group meal on the Thursday night, where we’ll take out out from the main conference venue and go to a local restaurant in either Brighton or Atlanta.

Who Should Attend?

The BI Forum is aimed at experienced developers using Oracle’s next-generation BI tools, specifically OBIEE, Endeca, ODI EE, Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware. Sessions will be at intermediate and advanced level, and will have a strong technical focus. If you’re the expert in your company at OBIEE or any of these technologies, and you’re interested in hearing how other experts are getting the most from these tools, this will be the event for you.

How to Book

Booking can be completed online, using the booking forms below, where you can also choose whether to also attend the optional Hadoop masterclass with Lars George.

Note that any purchase order payments will need to be settled by your organization prior to attendance, and be sure to book at the correct venue!
