Businesses Transform Customer Engagements with Oracle Live Experience Cloud

Press Release

Accelerates Transformation through Rich, Highly Personalized Mobile-First Interactions

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Sep 29, 2017

Oracle today announced Oracle Live Experience Cloud, a customer engagement service for the mobile generation. With the mobile and digital landscape shaping the way customers interact with businesses, companies must quickly adapt to changing expectations to deliver frictionless, real-time, contextual experiences across channels. With Oracle Live Experience Cloud, users can address these new requirements and bring a new dimension to their mobile and business applications by being able to serve customers in the way that best meets their needs, be it HD voice, HD video, screen sharing, and annotations.

As such, businesses will have the ability to quickly resolve customer issues, drive greater customer loyalty, and increase satisfaction by engaging users on the right channel at the right time. Agents will also be empowered to deliver better customer experiences by having access to contextual customer data and insights, cutting call times and limiting customer frustration.

“Nearly 70% of IT and business leaders say ‘improving customer experience’ is the goal of their digital transformation initiative, and advancements in the contact center are crucial to success,” says Robin Gareiss, president of Nemertes Research1. “Successful digital transformation requires short time to market. By leveraging a cloud-based solution, organizations can start seeing improvements in CSAT scores, revenue, and customer retention immediately. What’s more, the ability to retain context across channels from within the native app is a huge development and will dramatically boost customer satisfaction.”

A recent Oracle report titled “The Future of Enterprise Communications: The Cloud Redefines Customer Experience” noted that while 65 percent of companies agree communications embedded within cloud applications will become the dominant way of communicating with employees, suppliers and customers, many currently lack the ability to do so effectively. Oracle Live Experience Cloud enables embedded contextual data and business analytics so users can easily switch between channels without losing key information already shared. Regardless of the customer’s preferred channel, the user will enjoy a more streamlined experience while the business gains valuable customer insights that can be leveraged within its core business applications.

“Nothing is more aggravating than dealing with a call center or service desk where you are stuck in a long, dehumanized loop of menu options with a slow resolution,” said Doug Suriano, senior vice president, general manager, Oracle Communications. “With Oracle Live Experience Cloud, businesses can eliminate customer friction points by harnessing the power of contextual communications and real-time engagement capabilities to offer a personalized and highly interactive digital experience that builds customer loyalty and improves business outcomes.”

A cloud-native solution, Oracle Live Experience Cloud can be easily integrated into web and mobile apps and used to proactively engage customers at key moments of their individual journey. It modernizes existing Call Center and CRM solutions, supporting enterprise digital transformation efforts employees to deliver contextual and responsive cross-channel engagements that satisfy the customer and ultimately drive sales. Finally, businesses can optimize engagement success by measuring interactions in real-time and provisioning updates to further improve overall business results.

Commonwealth Edison, Baltimore Gas & Electric Awarded the 2017 Oracle Sustainability Innovation Awards

Press Release

Leading Utility Companies Recognized for Energy Efficiency Programs

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Sep 28, 2017

Oracle today announced that Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) and Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) will be presented with the 2017 Oracle Sustainability Innovation Awards at Oracle OpenWorld. The awards recognize customers that are committed to making environmental issues a priority across the enterprise. ComEd and BGE showcased unique ways to advance energy efficiency through innovative green practices using Oracle technology. ComEd leadership was distinguished by earning the 2017 Oracle Chief Sustainability Office of the Year award among all nominations.

“We are inspired by the successes achieved by ComEd and BGE as part of their core commitments to a sustainable future. Both companies have implemented Oracle technologies in a way that improved eco-efficiencies, innovation and transparency,” said Rodger Smith, senior vice president and general manager, Oracle Utilities. “We’re honored to present them with the 2017 Oracle Sustainability Innovation Award during Oracle OpenWorld this year.”

Both companies have made significant impact by employing the Oracle Utilities Opower Energy Efficiency solution. The solution includes Home Energy Reports (HERs) and online web tools that provide customers with information about their energy consumption, thereby encouraging conservation. Since 2009, ComEd has generated over 1.1 TWh in energy savings; BGE has used the program since 2012 to save 420,000 MWh. The two organizations have also successfully implemented Peak Management programs, which encourage customers to reduce their energy consumption when electricity demand is high. Because of this BGE has reduced peak demand by 16 percent for participating customers, and ComEd has reduced Greenhouse gases by 10 percent.

“We’re delighted to be recognized for our commitment to sustainable practices,” said Mark Case, vice president of Regulatory Policy and Strategy for BGE who leads energy efficiency initiatives for Exelon’s utilities. “We’ve seen great success and look forward to continuing to work with Oracle to drive energy efficiency.”

“At ComEd, we believe that meeting the energy needs of today and tomorrow will depend heavily on our ability to collaborate with our customers,” Val Jensen, senior vice president, Customer Operations at ComEd. “Working with Oracle gives us more opportunities to leverage data-driven insights and engage with our customers to drive energy efficiency.”

FBI Consumer notice: internet-connected toys could present privacy and contact concerns for children

The FBI encourages consumers to consider cyber security prior to introducing smart, interactive, internet-connected toys into their homes or trusted environments. Smart toys and entertainment devices for children are increasingly incorporating technologies that learn and tailor their behaviors based on user interactions. These toys typically contain sensors, microphones, cameras, data storage components, and other multimedia capabilities – including speech recognition and GPS options. These features could put the privacy and safety of children at risk due to the large amount of personal information that may be unwittingly disclosed.

The features and functions of different toys vary widely. In some cases, toys with microphones could record and collect conversations within earshot of the device. Information such as the child’s name, school, likes and dislikes, and activities may be disclosed through normal conversation with the toy or in the surrounding environment. The collection of a child’s personal information combined with a toy’s ability to connect to the Internet or other devices raises concerns for privacy and physical safety. Personal information (e.g., name, date of birth, pictures, address) is typically provided when creating user accounts. In addition, companies collect large amounts of additional data, such as voice messages, conversation recordings, past and real-time physical locations, Internet use history, and Internet addresses/IPs. The exposure of such information could create opportunities for child identity fraud. Additionally, the potential misuse of sensitive data such as GPS location information, visual identifiers from pictures or videos, and known interests to garner trust from a child could present exploitation risks.

Consumers should examine toy company user agreement disclosures and privacy practices, and should know where their family’s personal data is sent and stored, including if it’s sent to third-party services. Security safeguards for these toys can be overlooked in the rush to market them and to make them easy to use. Consumers should perform online research of these products for any known issues that have been identified by security researchers or in consumer reports.

Data collected from interactions or conversations between children and toys are typically sent and stored by the manufacturer or developer via server or cloud service. In some cases, it is also collected by third-party companies who manage the voice recognition software used in the toys. Voice recordings, toy Web application (parent app) passwords, home addresses, Wi-Fi information, or sensitive personal data could be exposed if the security of the data is not sufficiently protected with the proper use of digital certificates and encryption when it is being transmitted or stored.

Smart toys generally connect to the Internet either:
  • Directly, through Wi-Fi to an Internet-connected wireless access point; or
  • Indirectly, via Bluetooth to an Android or iOS device that is connected to the Internet.
The cyber security measures used in the toy, the toy’s partner applications, and the Wi-Fi network on which the toy connects directly impacts the overall user security. Communications connections where data is encrypted between the toy, Wi-Fi access points, and Internet servers that store data or interact with the toy are crucial to mitigate the risk of hackers exploiting the toy or possibly eavesdropping on conversations/audio messages. Bluetooth-connected toys that do not have authentication requirements (such as PINs or passwords) when pairing with the mobile devices could pose a risk for unauthorized access to the toy and allow communications with a child user. It could also be possible for unauthorized users to remotely gain access to the toy if the security measures used for these connections are insufficient or the device is compromised.

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) imposes requirements on Web site and online service operators directed to children under the age of 13 and on operators of other sites and services who knowingly collect personal online information on children under 13 (for further details on COPPA and protecting children online, refer to On 21 June 2017, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) updated its guidance for companies required to comply with COPPA to ensure those companies implement key protections with respect to Internet-connected toys and associated services, to include the use of mobile apps, Internet-enabled location-based services, and voice-over IP services ( In addition, a manufacturer’s failure to implement reasonable security measures for data collected by its Internet-connected toys could subject that company to an FTCenforcement action under Section 5(a) of the FTC Act, which prohibits unfair or deceptive practices in the marketplace. The FBI is encouraging all consumers to research areas and circumstances concerning the toys and Web services where laws may or may not provide coverage.

The FBI encourages consumers to consider the following recommendations, at a minimum, prior to using Internet-connected toys.
  • Research for any known reported security issues using online resources from sites that conduct cyber security research, consumer product reviews, and child and consumer advocacy
  • Only connect and use toys in environments with trusted and secured Wi-Fi Internet access
  • Research the toy’s Internet and device connection security measures
  • Use authentication when pairing the device with Bluetooth (via PIN code or password)
  • Use encryption when transmitting data from the toy to the Wi-Fi access point and to the server or cloud
  • Research if your toys can receive firmware and/or software updates and security patches
  • If they can, ensure your toys are running on the most updated versions and any available patches are implemented
  • Research where user data is stored – with the company, third party services, or both – and whether any publicly available reporting exists on their reputation and posture for cyber security
  • Carefully read disclosures and privacy policies (from company and any third parties) and consider the following:
  • If the company is victimized by a cyber-attack and your data may have been exposed, will the company notify you?
  • If vulnerabilities to the toy are discovered, will the company notify you?
  • Where is your data being stored?
  • Who has access to your data?
  • If changes are made to the disclosure and privacy policies, will the company notify you?
  • Is the company contact information openly available in case you have questions or concerns?
  • Closely monitor children’s activity with the toys (such as conversations and voice recordings) through the toy’s partner parent application, if such features are available
  • Ensure the toy is turned off, particularly those with microphones and cameras, when not in use
  • Use strong and unique login passwords when creating user accounts (e.g., lower and upper case letters, numbers, and special characters)
  • Provide only what is minimally required when inputting information for user accounts (e.g., some services offer additional features if birthdays or information on a child’s preferences are provided)
If you suspect your child’s toy may have been compromised, file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center, at

Celltrion Taps Oracle Health Sciences Safety Solutions to Help Bring Cost-Effective Life-Saving and Biosimilar Drugs to Market

Streamlines pharmacovigilance case management and safety reporting with Oracle Health Sciences Technology

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Sep 26, 2017

Oracle today announced that Celltrion (KOSDAQ: CELLTRION), a global leading biopharmaceutical company, has selected Oracle Health Sciences Argus and Oracle Health Sciences Empirica Signal to streamline its pharmacovigilance case management and patient safety initiatives – helping to bring more chronic disease and life-saving therapies to market more cost-effectively.

Driven by the cost saving potential of biosimilar drugs – an estimated $100 Billion in global healthcare spending cuts by the end of 2020* – there is an emergence of biosimilar drug manufacturers entering the market and regulatory bodies like the FDA are helping to accelerate getting these drugs to market. A key aspect in getting these treatments to market is safety and efficacy regulatory reporting, and Celltrion has turned to Oracle Health Sciences technology to help streamline the process.

“Since our founding in 2002, we have remained committed to making more advanced therapeutics available to everyone, and have turned to technology to help us achieve our goals. Oracle Health Sciences technology is supporting us in meeting today’s regulatory requirements and will enable us to move and shift as the regulatory landscape evolves, so that we can bring more life-saving and treatments to market safely and cost-effectively,” said Dr. Sang Joon Lee, vice president for Celltrion, Inc.

Oracle Health Sciences Empirica Signal delivers a dynamic, visual data-mining environment that will enable Celltrion to detect safety signals, uncover patterns and recognize trends in spontaneous adverse event reporting.

“It is great to see the biopharmaceutical market headed in new and innovative directions as we are seeing with the emergence of more biosimilar manufacturers. Oracle Health Sciences remains committed to evolving and innovating to continue meeting the needs of our existing and potential customers,” said Steve Rosenberg, general manager, Oracle Health Sciences. “Celltrion is a glowing example of a biotech company that is innovating to help improve people’s lives.”

KIK Custom Products Chooses Oracle HCM Cloud to Manage its Growing Global Workforce

Press Release

Consumer packaged goods manufacturer implements Oracle HCM Cloud to modernize its HR organization and enhance employee experience

Redwood Shores, Calif. —Sep 26, 2017

Oracle announced today that KIK, one of North America’s largest independent manufacturer of consumer packaged goods, has adopted Oracle Human Capital Management (HCM) Cloud to better serve its growing employee base while updating outdated HR systems and technologies. With Oracle HCM Cloud, KIK has the insights and flexibility to streamline HR processes and gain a unified employee experience across 20 different locations in North America.

Doubling its workforce in just three years, KIK’s HR department quickly realized it could no longer keep up with the pace and demand of recruiting, hiring, and managing employees. Outdated systems coupled with manual processes slowed down mission-critical HR functions. Disjointed technologies from multiple vendors lacked the integrated insights necessary for today’s global business environment. Yet KIK wanted to maintain the flexibility and customization to quickly adjust to the needs of its employees and business goals. After evaluating several solutions, including Workday, KIK ultimately opted for Oracle HCM Cloud for its flexibility, functionality, and robust offering.

“As a manufacturing partner to the world’s largest retailers and brands such as Top Job®, Greased Lightning®, Prestone®, Clorox Pool Products and Bullfrog®, KIK prides itself on the quality we deliver to each of our customers. However, the HR and payroll system in place could no longer support the very employees that contributed to the company’s incredible success,” said Julie Sereney, vice president, HR Shared Services at KIK. “With Oracle HCM Cloud we will gain global insights to ensure the success of our employees while core HR responsibilities like payroll, talent management, and employee benefits are streamlined under one umbrella.”

KIK needed a solution to quickly bring its 15-year-old legacy system up-to-date. While multiple vendors offered complex payroll systems, the company was seeking a service that could centralize several areas of HR into a single, comprehensive system.

“Oracle HCM Cloud offers businesses the chance to learn more about its biggest investment – its employees, with a unified view into everything from employee productivity to payroll,” said Gretchen Alarcon, group vice president, HCM Product Strategy at Oracle. “Oracle HCM Cloud delivers a simple, holistic platform that offers the robust HR and payroll solutions that KIK needs as a growing global business.”

KIK plans to implement Oracle HCM Cloud in two phases; the first focused on payroll, core HR capabilities, and employee benefits, and the second focused on performance, talent management, and recruiting.
