This Week's Original Content From The Linux Foundation

The Wayland display server protocol is a ground-up rewrite of the Linux graphical display subsystem, and (as all changes do) is causing consternation and controversy. So what's the big deal?
What's been your summer blockbuster favorite? Wolverine? Lone Ranger? Pacific Rim? You ain't seen nothin' yet! Our favorite summer blockbuster comes out September 16 with an exclusive showing only in New Orleans: LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America taking place September 16-18, 2013 at the Hyatt New Orleans.
Earlier this week, Google, IBM, Mellanox, NVIDIA and Tyan announced plans to form the OpenPOWER Consortium – "an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture." According to the release, the Consortium will collaborate on both hardware and software to build out new hyperscale and cloud data centers.
Since Linux.com last surveyed the community-backed open source board scene in June 2012, some projects have faded, but a number of new boards have popped up to take their place. Not all the projects offer the same transparency or open governance, but at a minimum, they all provide open source Linux or Android code (often both), full schematics and other documentation.
In previous tutorials we looked at writing code to access the onboard camera, preview the display, and save an image. That's the basics; but modern smartphones often have quite complicated cameras with a whole array of features – flash, white balance, a variety of scene modes, different Instagram-style photo effects, even face recognition.
The word 'community' has many definitions, especially in the world of open source software and Linux. Urban planner, artist and TED fellow Candy Chang has her own understanding of community, cultivated through collective art projects in her hometown of New Orleans. Chang will share her insights on community and collaboration in her keynote at LinuxCon North America in New Orleans, Sept. 16-18.
