By: @SQLDaily Tables: Databases for Developers #1

Tables are the foundation of your database. There are several types of table available in Oracle Database.
In this episode, Chris gives an overview of the tables you can use.

Reminder: EBS 12.2 Minimum Patching Baselines and Dates

Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 is now covered by Premier Support to September 30, 2023. This is documented here:
Oracle Lifetime Support table for EBS

Premier Support includes new EBS 12.2 patches for:
  • Individual product families (e.g. Oracle Financials)
  • Quarterly security updates released via the Critical Patch Update process
  • New technology stack certifications with server-based components
  • New certifications for end-user desktops and mobile devices
What are the minimum patching baselines for EBS 12.2?
The minimum patching baselines for EBS 12.2 have not changed.  New EBS 12.2 patches are created and tested against the minimum patching baseline documented in Section 4.1, "E-Business Suite 12.2 Minimum Prerequisites" in this document:
All EBS 12.2 customers must apply the minimum patch prerequisites to be eligible for Premier Support. Those patches include the suite-wide EBS 12.2.3 Release Update Pack and a small number of technology stack infrastructure updates.

Instead of applying the minimum baseline

Many new updates have been released since that patching baseline was originally published. These new patches contain stability, performance, and security-related updates and are strongly recommended for all customers.

If you haven't applied any of those updates yet, the simplest solution would be to apply the latest suite-wide EBS 12.2.6 Release Update Pack (RUP). That way, you get all of the 12.2 minimum patching requirements and the latest updates simultaneously.

If you've reached this blog article via a search engine, it is possible that a new Release Update Pack has been released since this article was first published. Click on the "Certifications" link in the sidebar for a pointer to the latest EBS 12.2 RUP.

The Critical Patch Update Advisory is the starting point for relevant information. It includes a list of products affected, pointers to obtain the patches, a summary of the security vulnerabilities, and links to other important documents.
Supported products that are not listed in the "Supported Products and Components Affected" Section of the advisory do not require new patches to be applied.
The Critical Patch Update Advisory is available at the following location:
It is essential to review the Critical Patch Update supporting documentation referenced in the Advisory before applying patches.
The next four Critical Patch Update release dates are:
  • January 17, 2017
  • April 18, 2017
  • July 18, 2017
  • October 17, 2017

MySQL Cluster 7.5 Is Now GA!

By Matt Lord-Oracle on Oct 18, 2016

The MySQL team at Oracle are excited to announce the immediate availability of the MySQL Cluster 7.5.4 GA release!

The development focus has been on improving overall performance and ease of use, combined with improved SQL support and the introduction of read optimized and fully replicated tables, all of which allow for better support of a variety of use cases.

Use Case: Hadoop Performance Records Smashed by Hops and MySQL Cluster--delivers over 1.2 million operations per second The key enhancements delivered by MySQL Cluster 7.5 are summarized below:
Improved Performance: Improvements in index/range scan performance and internal thread handling will allow for better use of existing hardware and a better overall user experience.

Improved Ease-of-Use: Improved logging and SQL views offer greater insight into the current configuration, state, and general database operations, all of which helps to decrease maintenance and support costs, increasing your ability to resolve issues early enough that they don't become bigger user impacting problems.

MySQL 5.7 Support: Developers can combine the InnoDB and MySQL Cluster NDB storage engines within a single database, using the very latest MySQL 5.7 release. This includes NDB support for the new native JSON data type, Generated Columns, and more!

Increased Capacity: With support for 128TB+ data set sizes per data node you can better utilize the much bigger commodity machines available today, which increases your ability to scale-up, in addition to scaling out.

Improved Read Scalability: You can mark all or individual tables as being read-optimized, thus effectively doubling your read throughput at the cost of slightly slower writes--a feature that is ideal for read-mostly tables. You can also declare some tables as being "global" or fully replicated--a feature that is ideal for lookup or fact tables which are relatively small, static, and often joined against (e.g. City, State, Product Type, etc.). These two features can greatly improve overall data locality--meaning that the data used for more complex queries (e.g. scans and joins) is local to a given data node, allowing you to avoid costly overhead associated with cross-node/cross-shard network communication and transaction management.

You can see the full MySQL Cluster 7.5 changelogs here, and the online manual here. If you're considering MySQL Cluster for a new application, please also see the Evaluation Guide.

Configuring Reverse Proxies and DMZs for EBS 12.2

Source: Oracle Blog´s

You may have end-users outside of your organization's firewall who need access to E-Business Suite.  One way of doing that is to set up a reverse proxy server and a series of network segments separated by firewalls.
EBS DMZ architecture
The outermost network segment that lies between the internet and an organization's intranet is often called a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).  DMZs are enforced by firewalls and other networking security devices.
Setting up a DMZ
Instructions for deploying EBS 12.2 in a DMZ-based architecture are published here:
Externally-facing EBS products
A subset of EBS products can be deployed for external use, including iSupplier, iRecruitment, iSupport, and others.  Many of these products have special rules that must be enabled in the URL Firewall to work properly in external deployments.  For a complete list of E-Business Suite products certified for external use, see Section 6 in Note 1375670.1.
